free music samples

Meeting lots of people over the past week, and sending lots of them to this site, so a quick note about finding my music:

1. Check out the half-dozen songs posted on my MySpace page. It's a pretty good sampling of stuff I've done over the past few years.

2. You can preview my entire new album for free at the Guante & Big Cats Bandcamp page. Buy it if you like it, but you can listen to the whole thing for free there if you want. The page also has a link to the EP we did, which has a few cool tracks on it too.

3. I'm assembling tracks (some new, some old) for a special jukebox thing or free mixtape download on this site, but it's not quite ready yet. Stay tuned!

THANKS!

The Twin Cities spoken-word scene, April to August

...is going to be intense. In a good way.

I won't post every event here; check out Minnesota Microphone for the full calendar. But man, MPLS semifinals, the last-chance slam for the St. Paul team, both cities' FINALS slams, a new registered venue (Punch Out Poetry's all-women's slam), two monstrous college teams (U of M and Macalester), a ridiculous Brave New Voices youth team, all kinds of special non-slam events too... and then there's the National Poetry Slam in St. Paul, 8/3-8/7.

Yeah, check out that calendar.

As for me, personally, I'll be competing at the St. Paul slam on April 5 (8pm at the Artists' Quarter). If I do alright, I'll be competing at Finals on May 3. Both slams are going to be incredible shows, I absolutely guarantee that. There's even a chance that I won't make the team this year (I was champ last year, and our team took first at Nationals); that's how good the TC scene has gotten. Either way, I'm looking forward to helping organize and promote NPS. Good things should be happening.

And of course, all this is on top of playing some BIG rap shows between now and August-- opening for dead prez at the Cabooze on 4/10, playing both of Kristoff Krane's album release parties in May, big shows in Madison, St. Louis and elsewhere, and a special surprise for May 1. Check the calendar for the full info.

Shows this week: PCRF benefit, Troops Out Now rally, DPU release party

Had a great time in Dekalb this past weekend. A whole bunch of big shows coming up in April and May. This week, three shows to check out:

Thursday, 3/18 at the Fineline (7pm): Benefit for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund:

Saturday, 3/20 at the Bedlam (2:15pm): Closing rally of the big Troops Out Now March:

Also on Saturday, 3/20: I'm not performing at this one, but Dragons Power Up are having their CD release show at the Kitty Kat Club (9pm). Big Cats is DJing the show. Should be a great time:
Also, mark May 1 on your calendar. Shh.

I'm in the Progressive!

The Progressive, a great... well, progressive magazine, is doing a feature series on spoken-word. They chose my piece, "The Family Business," (filmed by Justin Schell) to feature. A big honor for me.

Here's a link.

Big ups to Josh Healey for the hookup. Old friends from way back; he's doing big things now, and is a phenomenal poet. Check him out.
