another new song from the EP; free download

CultureBully posted another song from the "Start a Fire" EP. You can go there and download it for free. It's the "One of These Mornings" remix. Like a lot of people, I really liked the original version, but this one is fun too, especially live.

Remember, EP release party on May 9 at the Nomad! Here's the Facebook event page.

new song from the new EP

Just posted a new song over at myspace.com/elguante. It's called "Old English Letters," and it's from the new EP that me and Big Cats! are releasing (May 9 at the Nomad), "Start a Fire."

A version of this song was on my mixtape, but this one has a new hook and is re-recorded and mixed. It's a song about tattoos, but more than that it's a song about how pain, sadness or negativity can create something beautiful, if focused and directed properly. Tattoos are great metaphors for art, maybe even life in general. For more info on the song and the EP, check out this "director's commentary" I posted at the "An Unwelcome Guest" site.

Hip Hop Against Homophobia Update

(Photo by Jon Behm for CultureBully)

So a lot of people probably heard about (or attended) the first Hip Hop Against Homophobia back in January at the Nomad with Maria Isa, Toki Wright, Kredentials, Alicia Leafgreen, DJ Shannon Blowtorch, See More Perspective and myself. It was wildly successful-- packed shoulder-to-shoulder by 10pm, had to turn lots of people away, made crazy money for some great organizations.

We also had an all-ages version a few months later at District 202 that featured Chantz, The Tribe and someone else I'm forgetting (I had another show that night and couldn't make it, unfortunately, but I heard it was cool).

Now we have two more in the works: a big one June 13 at the Bedlam Theater w/ Tori Fixx, Johnny Dangerous, DJ Blowtorch and more TBA, and another all-ages one June 27 at the Depot in Hopkins. Me, Big Cats! and our band will be playing the latter one, which is a fundraiser for District 202. Full lineup of acts and sponsors TBA, but both should be pretty big and crazy. Spread the word.

On a related note, apparently the new Rhymefest mixtape is crazy homophobic. Which is a shame, because I've always liked Rhymefest. That's messed up. Spread the word on that as well.

new song, plus notes on the new EP

I posted a new track last night, it's the "Spirit Bomb" remix that See More Perspective produced for "Return to El Guante's Haunted Studio Apartment," an EP we released this past Halloween. That EP kind of got lost in the shuffle of other releases and stuff we were doing, but we're going to keep pushing it. For now, you can only get it at shows, but it'll be on ITunes soon enough.

Also, I just posted a kind of "director's commentary"
about the new EP that me and Big Cats! are releasing on May 9 at the Nomad, "Start a Fire." Just some notes and thoughts about the seven songs on the EP. Check it out. We'll both be posting a song or two from the EP very soon as well.

Invincible: Ropes video

This was one of my favorite songs on Invincible's album, "Shapeshifters." Really interesting intro too, about how the video was accepted for play on MTVU and then later denied due to its subject matter. Definitely check this out. Hat tip to Midwest Broadcast.
